Lucca Comics and Games 2015

An official screening of Giovanni’s Island, winner of the Excellence Award in the Animation Division at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival, and talk by its director, Mizuho Nishikubo, were presented at Lucca Comics and Games 2015 held in Lucca, Italy, from Thursday 29th October to Sunday, 1st November. The presentation to an audience of about 200 at the Cinema Centrale in Lucca started at noon on Friday, October 30th with Nishikubo’s greetingsand the screening then followed. A roughly five minute “Making of” video was also shown after the screening and Nishikubo spoke about how he came to make this work and what he wanted to convey in it. A program of Animated Short Program 2015 from 18th Japan Media Arts Festival was also then shown at the same venue from 20:00 on Saturday, October 31st.
More than 400,000 people came to this year’s highly successful Lucca Comics and Games during the four-day festival and the 220,000 tickets were sold out before the final day. Also from Japan, film director Mamoru Ishii’s “Garm Wars”was premiered in the movie section, Tsutomu Nihei (“Knights of Sidonia”), Usamaru Furuya, Kamui Fujiwara, Yasuhiro Naitow and Shintaro Kago participated in the comic section, and Eiji Shishido took part in the videogame section.

Lucca Comics and Games was launched in 1966 and is held from late October into early November every year in the walled city of Lucca in the outskirts of Pisa in Italy. Organized in six sections – Comics, Junior, Music, Games, Japan Town and Movies – some 15,000 booths are set up in special exhibition spaces around the city. The various events held during the festival include exhibitions, markets for comics, games, character goods etc., interactive displays of new products and opportunities to meet the authors. More than 350,000 people visited during the four-day festival in 2014. (Information from official website)
